In order for Nickto succeedswan knew she would need to manage and understand not only the expectations of kids in different cultures, but also the expectations of their parents. She says “It’s not about Americanizing our content; it’s about understanding each market and making sure the stories we’re telling are local and relevant. We have to be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking that because it worked here, it will work everywhere”.

She also believes that it is very important to listen to the kids in each market and give them a voice. Nickelodeon does this by commissioning local research in every country they are present in. This helps them “see what’s going on with kids’ lives, what their day-to-day looks like, and understand how our brand can fit into that”.

To move internationally, Nickelodeon allowed the channel to have its own “on-air identity and slogan” for each endeavor. The Nickelodeon International Swat Team was formed to launch the network in other countries, and when it was established, local workers were given control.

This transition team was made up of employees from various departments within Nickelodeon including: on-air promotions, research, ad sales, technical operations, and legal. This team would help with not only the logistics of setting up a new channel but also with providing advice on what worked in other markets and tailoring the content to fit the specific market they were targeting.
